Common Core Standards
The Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) is a state-led effort to provide a clear and consistent framework for preparing the nation’s children to succeed in college and future careers. The CCSSI is coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) with the goal of defining a common knowledge base and set of skills that all students should acquire during their K-12 education, regardless of where they live. The CC Standards build upon current state standards by introducing new levels of rigor and higher-order skills, by aligning with college and work expectations, and by providing teachers and parents with a common understanding of what students are expected to learn. Some contingencies support this move toward standardization and the changes it will bring at the school, district, and federal levels; others argue a Common Core stifles teacher creativity and innovation. Below is a listing of CPRE research that examines the issues schools and districts face as they integrate the Common Core State Standards into their curriculum.
