Suwak has a background in the mental health field and has previously worked as a Child and Family Therapist in both non-profit and private practices in the Philadelphia area. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Point Park University and an M.A. in Applied Developmental and Educational Psychology from Boston College.

More than 30 years ago, the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) began analyzing the effectiveness of education policies and standards and providing evidence-based knowledge to improve education practice. Originally headquartered at Rutgers University, CPRE moved to its current headquarters at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education in 1995.
